Minutes for Meeting 2728, Helmsmen Toastmasters Club 2412, Thursday, March 27, 2014

A warm welcome to our esteemed guests Travis Herbranson , Trudie Root. We hope you’ll join/ re-join our Helmsmen Toastmasters Club.

Congratulate Elizabeth Femrite, Yash Sinha and Annette Sanks for delivering speeches from the educational Better Speakers Series program!

Business:

1. We’re still in Contest season – Division A and District 27 Contests remain!

DIVISION A CONTEST INFORMATION, International Speech Contest and Evaluation
Contest, WHEN: Monday, March 31, 2014, 5:30pm to 8:00pm, WHERE: Bloomberg
BNA, 1801 South Bell St., Arlington, VA 22202, (Across from the Crystal City
Metro, with “Bloomberg” signage on top of the building), Note: Attendance is
free; $5 donation requested for refreshments.

The District 27 Spring Conference will be held on Saturday, 3 May 2014,
Crowne Plaza National Airport, 1480 Crystal Drive, Arlington, Virginia 22202
To register go to the District 27 Website: http://www.d27tm.org. The finalist
from the Evaluation and International Speech Contest in our District 27 will
complete during this event. You will hear from the best evaluators and
speakers from the clubs within District 27. Since we are DCP Club all our members may
attend the Spring Conference for at a discounted rate of $60.

2. Club dues! Treasurer Carl Sabath thanks everyone for getting the club through another successful semiannual dues collection !
A special thanks to Elizabeth Femrite for her assistance on the team!

3. Lillian Wilkinson, VP-Education, announced an opportunity for members to
participate in The Better Speakers Series. The Better Speakers Series is a
set of presentation offering instruction on basic speaking skills. Designed
to be delivered by members in their clubs, presentations in this series
provide new speaking techniques and facts that can help all club members
develop their communication skills. The presentations come with an outline
to develop your speech and a set of PowerPoint slides and is a 10 to 15
minute speech. You will get credit for a speech and the speech will also be
evaluated, so there will be credit for an evaluator. Contact Lillian

The next speeches will be given, during our normal meeting,
over the subsequent weeks. Please invite and bring guests.

We need volunteers to fill the other slots:

–Open “Controlling Your Fear” dated TBD
–Open “Using Body Language” date TBD
–Open “Know Your Audience” date TBD
–Open “Impromptu Speaking” date TBD

4. Elections Coming Soon. We will be electing new officers for the next 6 month term (July-December
2014). If you are interested in holding an officer position, please contact
Damien Butler or anyone of the current officers.

5. Reminder, next week’s meeting (3 April 2014) will be held in the Main Food Court in the lounge near the down escalators.

Remember that you can always be on the “Hot Seat” for last minute changes.
Things change often, so when you are ready to give your speech, let the TM
of the Day know even if you are not scheduled. We can always fit you in!
You can get credit for being Toastmaster of the Day, Evaluator, Table Topics
Master, Timer and many of the other duties. During or immediately following
the meeting, ask your fellow Toastmaster to provide a small evaluation in
your leadership book.
