Minutes for Meeting 2725, Helmsmen Toastmasters Club 2412, Thursday,
February 27, 2014

Welcome our newest Helmsmen Club members Ernie Davis and Richard Santiago!
Great Helmsmen say, “Yes!”.

Congratulations to TM Ryan Harrell on his grand debut role as TMoD. Well
done Ryan!!

Business:

1. Club Contest!! We Need Participants to say Yes!!! Next Week–Thursday,
6 March 2014!!!

Helmsmen Club Evaluation Contest: We will hold the Evaluation Contest next
Thursday, March 6, 2014, during our normal meeting. Our Contest Master for
the day will be Kimberly Scott and she is working on the agenda in
preparation for the contest next week.

–We have One Contestant, and we need more!!! Remember, you can get credit
in your Competent Leadership manual as completing an evaluation.
–Any member in good standing is eligible to participate as a contestant
(good standing means your dues are paid).
–Thanks to those members who volunteered to fill roles today. We still
need more volunteers for Chief-Judge, Judges (at least 5), Ballot Counters
(2), Timers (2), and Sgt-At-Arms.
–Contest Rule Book 2014 is attached.

2. International Speech Club Contest to be held on Thursday 13 March 2014!!!

Helmsmen Club International Speech Contest: We will hold the Speech Contest
in two weeks on Thursday, March 13, 2014, during our normal meeting.

–We need a Contest Chair and/or Contest Master for the Day. These roles
will help you meet Project #8 or #10 in your Competent Leadership manual.
–We have three Contestants, and we need more!!! Remember, you can get
credit in your Competent Communicator manual for completing a speech.
–You must have completed at least six speeches by the Speech Contest date
to be eligible to speak and also you must be a member in good standing.
–Other roles that need to be filled are Chief-Judge, Judges (at least 5),
Ballot Counters (2), Timers (2), and Sgt-At-Arms.
–Contest Rule Book 2014 is attached.

3. The winners from our club contest will compete in the 2014 Spring Area
11 and Division A Contest and here is the information (also on attached
flyer), AREA 11 CONTEST INFORMATION, International Speech Contest and
Evaluation Contest, WHEN: Thursday, March 27, 2014, 5:30pm to 8:00pm,
WHERE: Bloomberg BNA, 1801 South Bell St., Arlington, VA 22202, (Across
from the Crystal City Metro, with “Bloomberg” signage on top of the
building), Note: Attendance is free; $5 donation requested for refreshments.

DIVISION A CONTEST INFORMATION, International Speech Contest and Evaluation
Contest, WHEN: Monday, March 31, 2014, 5:30pm to 8:00pm, WHERE: Bloomberg
BNA, 1801 South Bell St., Arlington, VA 22202, (Across from the Crystal City
Metro, with “Bloomberg” signage on top of the building), Note: Attendance is
free; $5 donation requested for refreshments.

4. District 27 Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI)/Club Officer
Training. There is one more training you can attend tonight to meet the club
goal of having all club officers trained.

When: Thursday, February 27, 2014 (District 36)
Time: 6:00pm to 8:00 pm
Where: Pillsbury Law – Downtown
Location: 2300 N Street, NW, Washington DC 20037 (Corner of 24th & N
Streets, NW)

5. Lillian Wilkinson, VP-Education, announced an opportunity for members to
participate in The Better Speakers Series. The Better Speakers Series is a
set of presentation offering instruction on basic speaking skills. Designed
to be delivered by members in their clubs, presentations in this series
provide new speaking techniques and facts that can help all club members
develop their communication skills. The presentations come with an outline
to develop your speech and a set of PowerPoint slides and is a 10 to 15
minute speech. You will get credit for a speech and the speech will also be
evaluated, so there will be credit for an evaluator. Contact Lillian

The speeches we will be given, starting Thursday 20 March 2014 during our
normal meeting, and continue over the subsequent weeks.

We have the following line-up with speakers, topics, and dates for the first
3 speeches and need volunteers to fill the other slots:

–Damien Butler “Organizing Your Speech” March 20 2014

–Open “Preparation and Practice” March 27 2014
–Open “Controlling Your Fear” dated TBD
–Open “Using Body Language” date TBD
–Open “Know Your Audience” date TBD
–Open “Impromptu Speaking” date TBD

6. The District 27 Spring Conference will be held on Saturday, 3 May 2014,
Crowne Plaza National Airport, 1480 Crystal Drive, Arlington, Virginia 22202
To register go to the District 27 Website: http://www.d27tm.org. The finalist
from the Evaluation and International Speech Contest in our District 27 will
complete during this event. You will hear from the best evaluators and
speakers from the clubs within District 27.

Remember that you can always be on the “Hot Seat” for last minute changes.
Things change often, so when you are ready to give your speech, let the TM
of the Day know even if you are not scheduled. We can always fit you in!
You can get credit for being Toastmaster of the Day, Evaluator, Table Topics
Master, Timer and many of the other duties. During or immediately following
the meeting, ask your fellow Toastmaster to provide a small evaluation in
your leadership book.
