Minutes for Meeting 2675, Helmsmen Toastmasters Club 2412, Thursday, February 21, 2013

Congratulations and welcome to our newest Helmsmen Toastmaster, Timothy (Tim) O’Neil!

Business:

1. We welcomed our Area 11 Governor, Charlie DeWitt. Charlie praised Helmsmen for our progress toward Distinguished Club Program (DCP) goals. You can view the latest status of the DCP goals for Helmsmen Toastmasters Club at the following link – http://reports.toastmasters.org/reports_new/dcp.cfm He also solicited the interest of anyone to be his successor as Area 11 Governor; the term will begin in July 2013 and run for 1 year. Charlie reminded us of the upcoming Division A, District 27, Area 11 Speech and Evaluation Contests to be held on Wednesday, 13 March 2013, 6:30 – 8:45 PM at:

2. Dues! Beginning in March, Carl Sabath will be collecting semi-annual dues for the April thru September period. Carl has posted a separate email with details.

3. Royce Edington is the Contest Chair for the Evaluation Contest. The Evaluation Contest is 28 February! Please see Royce ASAP to sign up as a Contest Master, Contestant, Judge, Sergeant at Arms, Chief Judge, Timer, Ballot Counter, Model Speaker.

4. VP-Education, Mike Quashne is still in search of a Contest Chair for the Speech Contest. The International Speech Contest is 7 March! Until we get a Contest Chair, you can see Mike to sign up as a Contestant, Judge, Sergeant at Arms, Chief Judge, Timer, Ballot Counter.

Contest participation is an excellent opportunity toward achieving the completion of Competent Leadership manual projects. The 2013 Speech Contest Rulebook is attached – Please note the contestant eligibility requirements in paragraph 2, page 5.

EVALUATION CONTEST: All members in good standing are eligible to participate.
As a contestant, you will be presenting a 2-3 minute evaluation of a speaker who gives a Model or Test Speech.
Your evaluation must be within the time limits of no less than 1.5 minutes and no greater than 3.5 minutes.
The same warning light times apply as they do during a normal meeting – Green: 2 minutes, Yellow: 2.5 minutes, Red: 3 minutes

INTERNATIONAL SPEECH CONTEST: All members in good standing who have given at least 6 speeches are eligible to participate.
As a contestant, you give a 5-7 minute speech on a topic of your choosing.
Speech must be substantially original and references must be cited when your material is not original.
Your speech must be within the time limits of no less than 4.5 minutes and no greater than 7.5 minutes.
The same warning light times apply as they do during a normal meeting – Green: 5 minutes, Yellow: 6 minutes, Red: 7 minutes.

5. Royce Edington will be the Contest Chairman for the Evaluation Contest next week, Thursday, February 28, 2013. Contest Master is TBD.

6. We will meet in room B7 in the Pentagon Library and Conference Center next week.

Remember that you can always be on the “Hot Seat” for last minute changes.

Things change often, so when you are ready to give your speech, let the TM of the Day know even if you are not scheduled. We can always fit you in!

You can get credit for being Toastmaster of the Day, Evaluator, Table Topics Master, Timer and many of the other duties. During or right after the meeting, ask your fellow Toastmaster to provide a small evaluation in your leadership book.
