2010-12-16 Helmsmen Toastmasters Meeting 2569 Minutes


Helmsmen know how to provide 2010 with a great sendoff!

Congratulations to our guests, Dionte Wilder (2nd time), and also Elaine
We hope you’ll both decide to join our club. Kim Humes, previous member and
club friend, also delighted us with her attendance.

1. Business: Area A1 Governor and Immediate Past President Earl White,
moved that the following slate of Helmsmen Toastmasters Officers be approved
for the January 1, 2011 – June 30, 2011 semester:

Dvija Malovic, President
Jim Adams, VP, Education
Andrea Clark, VP, Membership
Lilnell Small-Storm, VP, Public Relations
Rochelle Unrue, Secretary
Carl Sabath, Treasurer
Bert Romero, Sergeant at Arms

A second was made by Samuel Unrue. Discussion was made available and Yeas
and Nays were taken. The slate was approved by a majority of Active
Helmsmen Toastmasters (14). (We have a current membership of 32, inactive
members total 9, so total active members is 23. A majority of active members
would be 12.)

The new officers will be recorded at Toastmasters International and will be
inducted in January 2011.

2. We took a few minutes so that folks could have a breakfast and coffee/tea
as a special treat for the last meeting of 2010.

Congratulate Carl Sabath for leading the meeting with the
Theme “Happy New Year”

Thank you for our guests: Dionte Wilder and Elaine D’Aprile, who was
invited by co-worker Lilnell Small-Storm!

Table Topics Master: Bert Romero

Gifts were brought in. Each person chose a gift and spoke about it
in conjunction with their table topics response.

3. Up and Coming:

Reminder, please be courteous to our TM of the Day and let
him/her know how you can help. Great Helmsmen say “YES!”

4. Duty Schedule sign up and how it works. We have a spreadsheet
that goes around at the meeting to indicate what role you would like to
perform at each meeting. The schedule goes out 4-8 weeks. Most importantly,
we’d like you to let us know when you can give your next speech. Help us
and schedule our upcoming meetings. New members join and we need to
incorporate them into the schedule. As you can see, flexibility is the

5. Things change often so when you are ready to give your speech
let the TM of the Day know even if you aren’t “scheduled.” We can probably
fit you in.

6. Mentors and Mentees – Let us know who you would like to be
mentored by or be a mentor to. The TM education program and meetings have a
to learn from and sometimes we need help with a speech, understanding
the TM education program or have questions about how club meetings are
run….so let us know.

7. Why not work on your leadership and speech awards
simultaneously? Don’t forget to bring in your Speaker and Leadership
You can get credit for being Toastmaster of the Day, Evaluator,
Table Topics master, Timer and many of the other duties. Right after the
Or during the meeting, ask your fellow Toastmaster to provide a small
evaluation in your leadership book.

8. Distinguished Club Program – The More We Do as Individuals, the
More Goals Our Club Gets. So far the Club has completed 6 out of 10

Goal 1 — 2 folks complete their Competent Communicator manuals
Goal 2 — 2 more CC’s completed
Goal 3 — 1 Advanced Communicator Award completed
Goal 4 — 1 more AC Award completed
Goal 5 — 1 Competent Leader, Advanced Leader or Distinguished TM
Award completed
Goal 6 — 1 more CL, AL or DTM completed
Goal 7 — 4 new members join
Goal 8 — 4 more new members join
Goal 9 — Officers are trained at both Summer and Winter TLI
Goal 10 — New Club Officer Lists are handed in on time and Dues
to TM Int’l on time.

Distinguished Club Program:

Earn 5 Goals – Club is Distinguished
Earn 7 Goals – Club is Select Distinguished
Earn 9 Goals – Club is President’s Distinguished
