Wow! Happy Birthday to You, Happy Birthday to You, Happy Birthday, Dear
Helmsmen, Happy Birthday to You!

Yes today is our club’s 53rd birthday!

Our meeting was led by Bert Romero with the theme of “I Dare You To…..”
taken from a book by the late CEO of the Purina Company, William Danforth.

Bert dared us to take that extra step to be better at our work and jobs, at
our hobbies and of course, at toastmasters. Master Evaluator was Kim Humes.

Word of the day was: FOMENT

Carl Sabath spoke on”Evaluate to Motivate” and Earl White presented a “Toast
to Coach Joe”. Evaluators were Bert Romero and Matthew Hall, respectively.

Terry Bartholomew led our Table Topics session with questions on Servant

Matthew Hall also provided questioners as the Listener of the Day.

Best Speaker of the Day went to Earl White
Best Evaluator of the Day went to Matthew Hall
Best Table Topics Speaker was guest Nathalie Carey.

We had 2 guests Nathalie Carey and Joseph “Jim” McColgan. We’re glad you
came and participated in Table Topics. Jim also was our Grammarian/Ah
Counter. We hope you will decide to come and start your way on the TM
Educational Program.

Congratulations go to Carl Sabath. With this speech, the club will earn
another Competent Communicator award toward its Distinguished Club Program

Business from President Earl White.

1. Next week, Thursday March 11. Please plan to attend. We’ll be in Room
B-9 for our club International Speech and Evaluation Contests. If you wish
to compete in either contest, contact Kim Humes. Obviously, we hope you
will decide to compete however we will also need other helpers (Judge, Sgt
at Arms, Timer, Etc.) so we can send our best Speaker and Evaluator to the
Area A1 Contest.

The International Speech contest. Contestants normally need to have given 6
speeches to compete. This is the speech that goes from Club, to Area, to
Division, to District and then to International. This speech is usually an
inspirational type speech meaning you’ve had some experience over which you
have triumphed. It can contain humor as well.

Evaluation contest. Yes this is a contest of how well folks evaluate
speeches. There is what is called a Model Speaker who gives a 5-7 minute
speech which all the evaluation contestants will evaluate in 2-3 minutes.
Only qualification is that contestants be members in good standing of their

Please consider being a contestant. If being a contestant seems really
challenging, there are other ways to participate. You can be the
Contestmaster, Chief Judge, a regular Judge, Timer/Ballot Counter, Sgt at
Arms, Model Speaker.

Note all speeches during contests are given manual speech credit; if
participating, make sure you get another club member to evaluate your

The Area A1 Contest will be held in Crystal City on March 25.

2. March is Dues Month

Renewing Members pay $36 in March for April through September.

Guests, that have attended our meeting, we hope you will decide (and DARE
YOU) to join our ranks and fill out an application to get started in the TM
Educational Program. New Members pay $62 for March-September.

Questions about membership, ask Carl or Kim.

3. Duty Schedule sign up. We have a spreadsheet that goes around at the
meeting to indicate what role you would like to perform at each meeting.
Most importantly, we’d like to DARE you to let us know when you can give
your next speech. Help us plan and schedule our upcoming meetings.

4. Don’t forget to bring in your Leadership manual. You can get, DARE I
say, credit for being Toastmaster of the Day, Evaluator, Table Topics
master, Timer and many of the other duties. Right after the meeting or
during the meeting, ask your fellow Toastmaster to provide a small
evaluation in your leadership book.

Happy Speaking!
